This Course introduces the student to the sewing machine- main parts, functions and care and gives students broader knowledge of learning how to use the sewing machine.  Introduces students to the various tools and equipment for measuring, marking, cutting, hand sewing, pressing and other special tasks. The course is a 2 weeks course.

This course involves the basic processes of garment construction- basic stitches, hand stitches, decorative stitches, seams and seams finishes. 

Students are introduced to the various outer edges on a garment, ie hems, waistbands, front and back openings etc., they are also introduced to the various types of closures used in garment construction and how these can be finished.  

Students are taught to eliminate bulk and achieve a flat smooth finish.

This Course offers the student the opportunity to learn about the paper pattern, types of paper patterns, pattern making terms, pattern production terms, pattern symbols, purpose, method and use in layout and cutting the garment, pattern grading and adjusting the length of patterns.

A pattern is the template from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabric before being cut out and assembled.  This course provides an overview of pattern drafting. Different methods of pattern-making, from using the dart for fit to adding shape for fullness, are explored. Taking body measurements for fit is taught.
